A single well developed hydrothermal method to synthetize P, N codoped carbon point (P, N / CD), which indicates a strong and stable fluorescence, good water solubility, low toxicity and good biocompatibility. Therefore, a novel and efficient „off-on” P, N / CD fluorescent probe developed for the highly sensitive detection of lipoic acid (LA) for the first time.

Fluorescence of P, N / CD quenched by Cu 2+ to form P, N / CD-Cu 2+ complex, which acts as an „off” process, but Cu 2+ can be removed by LA, for chelating strong between LA and Cu 2+, forming complexes more stable, which recovers fluorescence P, N / CD, in order to achieve „on” process. Under optimal conditions, the concentration of LA and the fluorescence intensity increases from P, N / CD-Cu 2+ complex displayed good linear relationship in the range of 0.05 to 28 pM, with a detection limit (S / N = 3) from 0.02 pM. Established „off-on” fluorescent probe successfully applied to the analysis of LA in the urine sample.

Interestingly, the quantitative evaluation of the effects of phototherapy showed that one of these AIEgens presented, namely TTNIR, performs well as a photosensitizer for photodynamic ablation of cancer cells in the white light irradiation. This study thus provides a useful insight into the rational design of fluorescence systems for widely set emission color with high brightness, and greatly expand the applications of AIEgens.
